The Disparagement

One cannot overlook your tenacity.

The perseverance it takes to carry on –

dancing with dignity after being stripped.

Relabeled, dethroned, excommunicated

from those you believed to be your peers,

who had always been your peers;

your brothers in timelessness.

But history repeats itself in the cruelest ways.

Just as Hades was denied his birthright,

eldest of his siblings and lord in heritage,

you too were cast to coldness and forced to continue

alone

by decree of those who are but children.

But what do the names of mortals mean?

So, what do they mean when gone?

Fifty seven sunrises between us.

Turn your back for a leisurely moment –

two and a half centuries!

Births and funerals in the lively-paced tedium,

and expired textbooks.

Ninety thousand five-hundred and sixty two sunrises later

and maybe they will reinstate you.

And maybe you’ll laugh coldly at the ever-darting little creatures.

And maybe you won’t even hear them.

An untitled response to “The world is too much with us” by William Wordsworth

I have walked widdershins along the wind,
and talked with dryads tucked away from sight,
and hiding from the day. They cast therein
spell-songs reserved for us who know the Night.
The names, now hidden under vines in runes,
are etched in me like a familial tone
of voice that knew old ways before the tune
was lost. And lost, you look on and bemoan.
The wolves have called me mother, father, child
since long before their howls the noise effaced.
Steel and glass now grow untamed and wild.
No beast or weed could spread at concrete’s pace.
You envy my kin. Why, then, do you weep
when you, just like us, could in meadows sleep?

Alright

Of course I said it was alright.
That’s what I’m supposed to say, isn’t it? That’s how I’m supposed to feel.
I’ll stand in the past and watch you two be
what I had always imagined for him and me.

Of course, I know it makes the most sense.
I already had my chance, didn’t I? I already had my break.
So why am I breaking again tonight?
Smiling and lying, pretending it’s alright.

We Saw the Sun

We saw the sun for the first time in three weeks yesterday.

It was the cold brightness of winter shining through our windows, painting the room in golden splendor. I longed to, like a cat, curl up on the windowsill above the radiator with a cup of coffee in hand, surveying the world I had not seen in light for a month. Winds had cleaned the air, uncovering the city from smog like a risen Atlantis. The threat of wet snow was swept away in the night, leaving a blue sky stretching onward forever, broken only by Gothic spires.

The winter day was short, and the golden light quickly turned to a medley of orange and opaque blue. Soon the semblance of warmth faded and left us with dim rooms framed in black window panes. We mourned the death of the sun. We recited elegies like it was a friend departing forever, a glimpse we would never see again - like a comet, the aurora borealis, or some other rarely seen majesty of the cosmos.

The night was clear and beautiful, but no one noticed, since in this city you can never see the stars, anyway. A dull charcoal drapes itself high over top of the buildings, lit up by the garish neon and flashing siren lights. The theater glows like a firefly attracting a mate. Cars move like searching flashlights, leaving no dark corner in the streets. A sickly yellow cascades itself over my head and onto the sidewalk as I walk home to the dark building, the only place to hide from the artificial smiles lit in artificial light, trying so hard to be the dead sun. Alone and in the peace, I close my eyes and surrender to the only true darkness that can be found on earth, submitting to the eternal grey of the city.

We saw the sun for the second time in three weeks this morning.

Serendipity. <3  “Serendipitous” is a really fun exclamation word, and aside from the already good meaning, I always think of the place that serves frozen hot chocolate… which sounds delicious and silly at the same time.
